The Judith Abrams Scholarship

The AATSP-LI is proud to announce the establishment of the Judith Abrams Scholarship.

For more than half a century, Judy has volunteered her time, energy and expertise to further language experiences for all Long Island language students and teachers.  Upon completion of her Bachelor’s degree at Hunter College in 1952, Judy began her career as a part-time Spanish professor at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.  A year later, she found herself teaching in the New York city Public Schools at JHS 60 on the lower east side of Manhattan.  A few years later, she and her husband, Arthur, relocated to “rural” Suffolk County.  She began teaching in the newly formed West Islip School District.  She soon became chairperson of the foreign language department and was instrumental in introducing language study in the 7th grade, providing a 4th year of language study in the high school and instituting one of the first language labs in Suffolk County.  After a six year child-care hiatus, Judy Resumed teaching in the Elwood School District where she also served as a foreign language department chairperson.  She remained there until an early retirement in the mid 80’s.

Judy’s participation and service to our organization dates back to the mid 50’s when she began her career.  She was one of the pioneers who introduced the National Spanish Exam to Suffolk County.  Along with two colleagues, she formed the Suffolk County Chapter of the AATSP and served the chapter in many capacities until in merged with the Nassau County Chapter in 1983.  Since then, Judy has served the Long Island Chapter of the AATSP continuously:

Ø    Active member of the Executive Council (with perfect attendance for over 23 years)

Ø    Judge of the Sabelotodo and Sepalotodo contests.

Ø    Item writer for the competitions

Ø    Coordinator of the NSE (along with Felipe Mercado)

Ø    Membership Coordinator (along with Margaret Fernandez)

Ø    Coordinator of the LILT/AAT’s Poster Contest

Ø    AATSP Liaison to the LILT Executive Board

Ø    AATSP archivist

Ø    Trophy Coordinator for the Entrega de Premios

Ø    Invaluable adviser to the AATSP Executive Council

Judy has consistently done more work for the Long Island Chapter of the AATSP and Long Island language students than anyone in the history of our chapter.  And, she plans to continue doing so.  We are very grateful for her unprecedented service and dedication to our profession and are pleased to establish this scholarship in her name.
